Introduced in 1972, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak was designed by Gerald Genta. The watch featuring an octagonal screwed bezel that was initially inspired by a ship’s porthole is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic wristwatch designs of the 20th century. Not only was it the basis of the Brands success until today, it also was the forerunner of other iconic watches like Patek Philippe Nautilus also being based on similar design principles by Gerald Genta.

Originally designed and produced only in steel, Audemars Piquet decided to produce a limited number of their then already landmark Royal Oak watch in white gold. Rarely coming to auction, this reference 5402BC is one of only 149 believed Royal Oak to have been manufactured in white gold.

Bearing a double digit serial, crafted out of solid 18-karat gold, its heft is enormous especially when compared to the regular Royal Oak production stainless steel versions. Measuring an oversized 39mm in diameter, this watch bears the most thought-after mini “tapisserie” patterned dial, a texture found on all early Royal Oak dials and resembling small pavestones.

Presented in superb overall condition, the watch’s case and dial show no signs of restoration and have retained their finishing and original dial color. The present lot is a rare opportunity for collectors of luxury sports watches.
